Dye Sublimation Printing

Dye sublimation printing is a digital printing method that uses heat to apply graphics to different materials. Dye sublimation printing is also known as digital sublimation printing.

Originally, it was developed as a form of textile printing in France in the late 1950s. Since then, it has been adapted over the years to suit various needs. This is an incredibly popular printing method and is still used widely today.

Understanding the Process

Similar to other digital printing methods, dye sublimation printing is fairly simple. The first step is to choose or create your particular design. Once ready, with the right software, you can send it directly to the printer.

The printer will then print your image onto transfer paper. The image is printed onto the paper ‘backwards’ so that when it is applied to the substrate it is the right way round.

Once ready, the transfer paper is positioned against the substrate and then they are both placed into a heat press. The heat press heats the ink on the paper causing it to sublimate. The sublimation process turns the ink into a gas which then infiltrates the substrate.

This means that the ink becomes embedded in the material, rather than sitting on its surface like other printing methods.

Its Different Uses

Because of the versatility of the ink and the transfer paper, this printing method can be used on a variety of products.

Often, dye sublimation is used to create printed apparel. Clothing, preferably made with polyester, tends to work well with the sublimation process. Tote bags, pillowcases, doormats and blankets are also useful products that can be printed on.

Dye sublimation is also heavily used to create signage, banners and flags. Dye sublimation is usually very bright making your advertisements more eye-catching as well as durable.

It can even print on hard surfaces, such as ceramics and glass, as long as there is a polymer coating. Without the coating the sublimated ink has nothing to fuse with, meaning the print will not take. This means you can create products such as mugs, tableware and more.

The Benefits of Dye Sublimation Printing

Dye sublimation printing is a trusted and popular process with a variety of benefits. Here, we’ll outline the key reasons people prefer to use it.

Colours

Dye sublimation is often more vibrant than other printing methods. This can mean your designs show more detail and can even come across clearer than with other methods. This can help to ensure the effectiveness of your design.

Durability

Because the inks blend seamlessly with the substrate material, the print is often very durable. It’s less likely to fade with time or sun exposure and is more resistant to cracking or peeling. This makes them an incredibly worthwhile investment.

Versatility

As stated above, dye sublimation printing can be used to print on a variety of materials. This means you can create almost any product you require, as long as you have the right coating.

Speed

Dye sublimation printing is very fast to set up. This makes it a cost-effective choice if you need a quick turnaround and have a smaller project batch.

The Drawbacks of Dye Sublimation Printing

While there are many benefits, there are a few key drawbacks worth considering before you get started.

Dark Fabrics

While the print quality is usually vibrant and bright, it is less effective on darker materials. Black cloth or other dark colours will likely struggle to showcase the design in the best light.

Required Coating

While not all materials require it, if you are printing on hard surfaces you will almost always need an additional coating before the print. This can sometimes increase the cost as well as the printing time.
